Been a long time since I have blogged here. So long, in fact, that I went ahead and completely restarted the blog. I’m keeping the same name, because hey, have the URL and I kind of love the fact that it’s a random and nonsensical name. But I think instead of just being a general blog, I’m going to use this as a record of our adventures in homeownership – because we are in the process of buying our first house!
We’ve been renters since we got engaged. It had a lot of benefits (flexibility! could call someone else if something broke!) but with the rental market in the greater Atlanta metro area becoming tighter and tighter, and with us planning on staying in this area for a long time yet, it makes way more sense on paper to buy instead of rent.
And so one Friday morning, I called a mortgage broker and was pre-qualified for a mortgage. Then I emailed a real estate agent we’d worked with awhile back when we first tossed around the idea of buying, she was available. Lined up a few houses to look at that weekend. Sunday, we go look at the houses, decide we like one. Get home, find out they already have an offer and want our offer that evening. We had no intention of going this quickly and did not have the actual written pre-qual letter yet. Sooo…Sunday night at 8pm-ish, I’m on the phone with yet another mortgage broker getting pre-qualified yet again so that we can put in an offer.
I usually wouldn’t make a big life decision nearly this quickly, but we had been tossing around the idea of buying for a few years now and had been watching the market pretty closely, so I’m fairly sure we’re getting a good deal and I haven’t seen anything else appear on the market since then that we’d be interested in.
Closing is May 18th. Painters come May 22nd. I have a million ideas pinned on Pinterest or floating around in my brain. I’m really looking forward to making this house ours.
